Go Bonsai Wild June 11-12

MihalicWho says bonsai people can’t go wild? On June 11 and 12 at pfm Bonsai, a Wild Bonsai Weekend welcomes new bonsai material from the wilds of Maine and beyond, collected by wild guys Kris and John of Black Dodge Bonsai. On Saturday, slightly crazy bonsai master Frank Mihalic returns to help style those trees for an insanely low $75 for the day, with lunch. Register at pauline@pfmbonsai.com, and don’t forget your tools, wire and meds.

Build Your Own Tokonoma

photoBe the first kid on your block to build your own tokonoma! On April 3 at pfm bonsai, Mohawk Hudson Bonsai Society will host the return of this killer workshop that produced some swell displays in 2012.

The workshop will be led once again by David Knittle, famed in the bonsai community for his woodcraft and exquisite bonsai display tables and stands.

Assemble your very own LED-lit maple or cherry tokonoma from pre-cut kits meticulously prepared by David, perfect for displaying your bonsai trees, accents and mini-scrolls. Two sizes are available—choose the best size for your trees!

Even if you’re all thumbs, you’ll produce a beautiful result under David’s close supervision using only basic tools and some elbow grease. The workshop starts at 9 AM and ends when the tokonomas are finished.

We are limited to 8 people for this workshop so reserve your space today by emailing Pauline at pauline@pfmbonsai.com.

Bonsai Gatherings

FatherSon1Our official MHBS clubhouse, pfm bonsai in West Charlton, has announced some exciting upcoming events to soldier us through spring.

February features a Shitakusa/Kusomono Workshop on the 21st, an Art of Wiring lesson on the 27th, and Accent Pot Making at the monthly MHBS meeting on the 28th.

March brings out the trees with an Amur Maple Shohin Bonsai Workshop on the 5th, a Blended Tree Shohin Bonsai Workshop on the 6th, and a Father/Son Larch Bonsai Workshop on the 12th.

Also, Monday Night Bonsai get togethers will resume in March. Join club members at pfm bonsai for an evening with our two favorite food groups—bonsai and pizza. No cost, just a small contribution for the pizza. Please email Pauline by Monday morning so she has a food count.

Curious guests are always welcome at our club meetings and are also welcome to inquire about workshops. To learn more, contact Pauline at 518-882-1039 or by email at pauline@pfmbonsai.com.

Wire Your Larch Workshop

Larch in snowYour larch bonsai are bored. There they sit in the snow waiting for spring. It’s time to spice up their winter with a good wiring, and Sunday’s the time to do it.

Join MHBS at 12 noon this Sunday, January 31 at pfm bonsai, for a brief larch wiring program by Pauline and an afternoon of wiring your larch or whatever else needs new wire. If your trees are frozen you can still wire it but save the bending until spring. Bring trees, tools and wire. If you need wire, the studio is fully stocked with copper and aluminum. Nothing to wire? Come and watch or buy something new to work on. Trees from Pauline’s greenhouse may be kept in the greenhouse until spring.

Feel free to bring something to share for the group’s lunch. Club members, pay your 2016 dues, sign up for workshops, MABS or ABS, socialize, and see 2015’s events in review on the big TV.

As always, guests are welcome.
