A reminder that our upcoming February meeting and workshop will be held at Faddegon’s Nursery in Latham, NY.
Jonas Dupuich was our first visiting artist of 2025 in January, giving an incredibly engaging virtual presentation on critique/evaluation of trees and elements of tree displays.
Jonas began with examples of different types of trees in differing stages of development and refinement, going over each with both his own critique and thoughts as well as engaging club members for theirs both directly and via live polling during the presentation.
He went over several forms he’s seen used at international shows and in his local bonsai club and we hope this may help prompt and structure tree assessments at meetings in the future for the MHBS. Some examples from his excellent talk are included below.

Mr. Dupuich also showed elements of display at some conferences, both local and in Japan, and some of his own prep work on trees working in Japan. He was also kind enough to share examples from his upcoming new book.

Finally, he finished his lecture with an example of a very innovative 3D Bonsai tool (3Dbonsai.com) which allows viewing trees from the 2024 Pacific Bonsai Expo from all angles. Access to a sample scan gallery is free, and access to the whole expo gallery is available for $20.00 for 24 months. The tool is useful for seeing how the bonsai presented are designed and structured from all angles.
Jonas’ website/blog are also available for educational posts at Bonsai Tonight (bonsaitonight.com)
We sincerely thank Mr. Jonas Dupuich for a wonderful and engaging presentation!!
We hope to see members at our upcoming February 23rd tree workshop at Faddegon’s Nursery in Latham NY. Happy Bonsai-ing!
