The Return of Young Choe

Young Choe

Some MHBS club members were lucky enough to create a kusamomo last year under the guiding hand of Young Choe. If you weren’t among them, or even if you were, you’ve got another chance. Young returns on Sunday, June 9, for an all-day workshop beginning at  9:00 AM, prior to the monthly MHBS club meeting at noon. In the morning we will create calligraphy, and in the afternoon we will again build a kusamono with Young Choe.

The all-day workshop is only $35 and a few spots remain. Register with Pauline at pfm bonsai. Our last Young Choe event was sold out so don’t delay. Bring tools and a deepish bonsai container for your kusamono. Everything else is provided. Don’t forget something for the pot luck lunch.

Bonsai Gatherings

FatherSon1Our official MHBS clubhouse, pfm bonsai in West Charlton, has announced some exciting upcoming events to soldier us through spring.

February features a Shitakusa/Kusomono Workshop on the 21st, an Art of Wiring lesson on the 27th, and Accent Pot Making at the monthly MHBS meeting on the 28th.

March brings out the trees with an Amur Maple Shohin Bonsai Workshop on the 5th, a Blended Tree Shohin Bonsai Workshop on the 6th, and a Father/Son Larch Bonsai Workshop on the 12th.

Also, Monday Night Bonsai get togethers will resume in March. Join club members at pfm bonsai for an evening with our two favorite food groups—bonsai and pizza. No cost, just a small contribution for the pizza. Please email Pauline by Monday morning so she has a food count.

Curious guests are always welcome at our club meetings and are also welcome to inquire about workshops. To learn more, contact Pauline at 518-882-1039 or by email at

August 30 Club and Estate Sale

Bring your wallets to the August MHBS meeting at PFM Bonsai when our Club and Estate Sale starts at 10 AM. Three estates worth of bonsai pots and books will be on sale—cash, check or charge—along with member trees needing their next home. Club members, remember to bring your trees and other sale items by 9:30 AM, clearly priced.

After lunch Pauline will conduct a Shitakusa and Kusamono Workshop—work with Pauline’s hand made pottery and accent material or bring your own. It’s great timing for putting together your displays for the club show in October. It will help to bring a list of trees you hope to display. Register by email:

See you Sunday!

Kusamono Workshop Photos

Pauline feeds our brains.

We scramble for plants.

March display trees.

Pauline thoroughly covered the art and techniques of kusamono and shitakusa during her presentation and workshop at PFM Bonsai last weekend. Afterward we all got to buy, borrow and swap plant materials to make our own, which was good timing for display prep for our spring show. Now if they only survive…

Shitakusa and Kusomono workshop

Come and learn about accents to use with your bonsai and other plantings that can be displayed all on their own.

March 25 at PFM Bonsai at 12 Noon.
BYO lunch for the meeting followed by the program and workshop.

Pauline will give a lesson on Shitakusa and Kusomono to be followed by an open workshop. The workshop is free, the only costs are those of the plants and containers. Pauline has made a large variety of original containers for this event. You may also bring your own containers and plants. If you plan on participating, bring your tools and an idea of which bonsai in your collection you would like to make an accent plant to accompany it. Consider bringing in the bonsai you want to match with an accent for the show table.

Special raffle of a beautiful planting slab donated by Molly and some Shitakusa and Kusomono donated by Pauline. Remember, bring a show tree and get a free raffle ticket!
